This, ladies and gentlemen, is what is looks like when your throwout bearing decides it’d rather be a grenade.

To those late to the party, you can catch up on the full saga of why I’m looking at a diet of ramen noodles for a while, catch up on my !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

Phew, at least it was but a throwout bearing.

I think you need to throw out that throwout bearing

Clutch disk had less than 10% life left on it and the flywheel was pretty glazed. We’re putting in a whole new clutch assembly.

Everything but the input shaft is being replaced, lol.

That’s pretty interesting. I’ve gone through clutches and I’ve even grenaded new clutches (not rated for the power) but I’ve never had a throwout bearing fail like yours did. That’s interesting. I would expect the bearings to give but not catastrophic failure. Good job, actually.

What’s even more amazing is that I was able to drive it 8 miles to my buddy’s garage in that condition.

Hey, you don’t really need to actuate the clutch if you just rev the engine and slam the gears. :P

So LS swap? SR20? Maybe RB? JZ? LMNOP? Coyote?

Yeaaaaah....I’m already out of money as it is. I’d rather not replace the gearbox itself too. :-P

If I had the option of a motor swap? 2.3L Duratec.

look at all the shiny metal splinters! Very interesting - I blew up a throwout bearing in a VW beetle, but that’s the only other time I’ve heard of one giving out. Maybe the prior owner would just keep it in gear all the time....

If you drive around with what’s effectively no clutch, you’re just shifting (ha!) the burden to the synchros. Gears themselves should be fine, you’ll just accelerate that feeling old transmissions have where it fights you going into gear in the cold.

Usually if the bearing goes it is due to operator error. Clutch replacement kits usually include new bearings, too.

That isn’t supposed to be there. In fact I’m pretty sure that is supposed to be in the picture right below this one. Good to see that you’ve got your transmission/clutch problem diagnosed, and hopefully you get it sorted in short order so you can get the Mini back on the road. Keep your chin up and keep fighting the good fight, we’re all pulling for you.

Just read through your whole series, this sounds like quite the adventure. Glad things are turning around for the better and the car working is certainly one major stressor to be rid of. Recently did the hydraulic and full clutch kit replacement on my Miata at ~140k miles on the original clutch. Night and day difference in shifting smoothness. Now you just need a solid source of income and shit would be good!

I posted this on your FB post, but I figured I would share it here. Half my bearings spilled out onto the floor when I cracked the trans loose.

Nice! A small silver lining to all of this - the Valeo conversion is crisper and more responsive. Woot!

I drove it roughly 12 miles from when it first started making noise. There was no damage to the inside of the bell on the trans. Not even any chewed up fins like Ive seen on others cars.
